Told Media Experience
I am currently located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania working for a start-up company called Told Media. We are a design and development agency that builds websites, mobile applications, UX/UI and custom software applications for entrepreneurs, mid-level companies, and government agencies. It’s been a very interesting experience to say the least; I’ve learned a lot in the short period of time (1 month) I have been here.
The process on how I received a position in this company is also very interesting. I have been an entrepreneur for the most of my life (16 – Now) working on separate businesses ranging from phones to cars and now mobile applications. When I was running my iPhone repair company TechWorld at West Virginia University for two years I learned a lot about entrepreneurship, but by the time I had reached my senior year, I realized there really wasn’t much more that I was going to learn from running that business. I realized I wanted to learn more about entrepreneurship in different sectors, and in order to do that I needed to shutdown TechWorld or find a way to make it run when I left, I decided to simply shut it down. This was a company that was my baby since I was 18 years old and that baby was raking in $4,000 in monthly profits monthly at one point. My lifestyle changed, my mindset changed and I had to hit the reset button.
Shortly thereafter with a few months remaining in school, I downloaded an app called Shapr, which is like a Tinder for Entrepreneurs, where I swiped right and matched with the CEO of Told Media / Mappify.co / ParkingBee.com named Mike Black, I was able to discuss with him my interest in getting involved with new opportunities. After discussions of what we were currently and p reviously were working on, he was able to offer me a sales position within the company to help find app development leads to work on. I was really excited to work with the Told Media team to learn more about the app development world as well as refine my entrepreneurship skills in different areas. My role quickly shifted into a Business Development role, being able to essentially grow the brand as if it were own. From the beginning, I wanted to work closely with a CEO to see how they operate day in and day out. I am able to do three things currently with Told Media: receive the last of my college “internship” credits by working with them, earning commission cash for selling / finding software projects, and work closely with a CEO (who I live with) of a start-up company to learn more about how they operate a company. Specifically I wanted to learn how the app development process works from the idea phase all they way up to development as well as learn from other entrepreneurs and their mistakes as they build these software products. On top of that I wanted to improve other skills that I’ll be able to go more into detail about (pt.2) once I am able to learn more from actually using them.
I believe the only few things I can thank West Virginia University for is for providing an unbelievable college experience where I was able to meet people that I will cherish until my death, as well as for allowing me to experiment my skills in entrepreneurship when running my own company, as small as it was. Adding to that, I do not thank you for the never operational PRT, the hangovers your High St. gave me, the school assignments for subjects I’ll never use and the professors that barely spoke English. Besides all that, it provided me the ability to be able to manage my time between school, social life and a regular life.
College graduates should always be pretty sought after they graduate for the simple fact that they left a fairytale land of partying, drinking at noon on a Saturday and Sunday to giving 40 hours of their week to a company that will rake in 10-1000x more than they get paid with a salary. They’re sometimes hungry to start “Adulting” and their companies will provide all the necessary training, office parties and paid vacation to hopefully keep them happy.
If you or someone you know is interested in mobile applications and how the process works from ideation, to customer discovery, concept verification and development / marketing.
