Crazy
There is many times in my life that I’ve felt like I communicated something well. But one time that really stood out to me was a speech I did for Ernst & Young last year in front of a room of the countries top CEO’s. The non-profit company that sent me wanted me to simply speak about my experiences as an entrepreneur, but instead I choose to speak about how I thought I was “Crazy” growing up. Not mentally crazy, but crazy for always thinking of invention ideas, businesses or even how to make a quick dollar.
It started in elementary school; I would buy CD’s and sell burned copies to my friends at school for $5 each. On top of little gigs like that here and there, I would run all the yard sales and was usually the event planner with my friends. I went on to win a national business competition and start two other businesses before turning 21. On top of stories, I was finding a unique way to communicate to my audience and have it relate to them. The cool part, I also had an opportunity to communicate my representation of NFTE, the non-profit that I had won the competition with. It was a perfect mix of story, facts and sponsorship. I felt I had done a very good job crafting the whole thing without sounding too pushy in any category.
Communication of any type, to any type of audience is an art. Whether it is speaking, writing, body language, or even hand signing. I felt like I did it all. On the way off the stage I remember I wanted to celebrate so badly, I killed it! It was one of the few moments in my life I knew I would remember forever.
